A Family Ensemble

 

“When I was a little kid, both my mother and father came from musical families. My father was a great flautist, composer, and conductor and my mother’s father was a wonderful Neapolitan songwriter. Her brother was a fine trumpet player in the same orchestra my father played in. He brought his friend home to dinner one occasion, and that’s how my father met my mother.”

Both sides of Francis Coppola's family come from the south of Italy. The Penninos are from Naples, the cultural center of southern Italy.

Humbert was a fellow musician of Carmine Coppola, Francis' father. He introduced his sister Italia to Carmine, who later wed.

Francesco Pennino accompanied by well-known poets and composers of Naples in 1915. The 17th century saw Naples as the heartbeat of music in Europe and home to one of the finest opera houses.
