1882 Cabernet Sauvignon

Niebaum’s status as one of the leading pioneers of Napa Valley’s wine industry inspired us to create our 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottle’s label bears an image of the stone threshold to that humble test cellar, a symbol of our resolve to have the name of Niebaum-Pennino embody the defining qualities of our two namesakes––foresight, creativity, and devotion.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 vintage of 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon offers splendid aromas of blueberry and cassis with highlights of anise, savory fine herbs, and red cherry. Finely grained tannins enhance a complex yet polished structure that finishes fresh and vibrant with a mysterious hint of mocha.

Vintage Notes

A winter with average rainfall, following four years of drought, provided ample soil moisture to kick-off the 2016 growing season. Early spring was warm, triggering rapid, healthy canopy growth. Average late-spring temperatures and limited rainfall reduced the risk of frost during mid-May bloom, ensuring average yields. June closed with a heat spell, slowing vine canopy growth at the ideal time. The harvest for the 2016 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon took place under optimum conditions from September 12th through October 10th.

Tasting Notes

Alluringly garnet red in color, the 2017 vintage of 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon leads on the nose with very compact, polished aromas of ripe currant, cedar, and plum. On the palate, the wine is refreshing, with subtle hints of wild blackberry and forest floor. The finish is medium in length, fresh and supple.

Vintage Notes

In 2017, our organically farmed estate vineyard received bountiful rainfall throughout winter and spring – nearly 50 inches. Fueled by the abundant rain, bud break occurred ten days earlier than it had the previous year, which foreshadowed an earlier harvest. Temperatures throughout the growing season were steady, except for three brief periods of heat during the summer. Harvest for the 2017 vintage of 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon began in early September and concluded by month’s end, allowing our crew to pick at optimal ripeness.

Tasting Notes

With its deep, red garnet color, 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon leads off on the nose with attractive notes of cocoa powder, black cherry and ripe black plum. Immediately round and supple on the palate, the wine shows ripe flavors of cassis and black cherry, with a deft touch of French oak on the finish. Full and well-textured, this vintage of 1882 is particularly vibrant and fresh, with polished tannins of excellent quality.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 vintage produced a generous crop of excellent quality. Well-timed precipitation in March and April encouraged slow, steady spring shoot development. Moderately warm temperatures throughout the season were ideal for gradual, even ripening of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest began in the Fountain block next to the historic Inglenook Chateau on September 19th, and continued at a smooth pace, culminating with blocks from our Cohn and Red Barn vineyards on October 18th.

Tasting Notes

Visually stunning, with its deeply opaque ruby red color, the 2019 vintage of 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon is aromatically inviting, showing notes of black currant, plum, cedar and vanilla. Flavors of wild blackberry, espresso and a touch of tobacco emerge on the palate, underpinned by a ripe, velvety mouthfeel. Overall, the wine represents an impressively nuanced expression of classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vintage Notes

The 2019 growing season was preceded by a wet winter that replenished soil moisture, and cut the risk of frost damage to the crop. A cool spring delayed budbreak in our red Bordeaux varieties until the second week of April, leading to excellent conditions for bloom, which occurred just after it rained in the third week of May. A high percentage of the fruit for this wine was picked between October 8th and 14th from our Chateau vineyard blocks, which are located on Bale clay loam soils in front of the Chateau. Harvest was later than normal, which allowed for gradual, even ripening and absolutely optimal maturity.

Tasting Notes

Boldly ruby in hue, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 leads with red cherry and black currant, accompanied by lively notes of violet and blackberry. Hints of dried blue and black fruits are discovered as the wine develops in the glass. The first taste is very fresh with a well-structured, long finish. In the company of ripe tannins, the structure balances beautify with the freshness.

Vintage Notes

A welcomed rainfall just before bloom set the stage for excellent fruit set for a small 2020 crop. Strong canopy growth offered the fruit protection from the short spells of summer heat as the season progressed toward an early and brief harvest. All fruit was harvested by hand in just under four weeks, commencing August 31st, coincidentally Niebaum’s birthday, and concluding on September 25th.

This wine exhibits lighter red fruit characteristics, prominently featuring the delicate flavors of raspberry and cherry. Additionally, there is a subtle nuance of graphite, adding a touch of complexity to the overall profile. The result is a well-balanced composition that combines the freshness of red berries with an intriguing mineral element.

Vintage Notes

Welcomed rainfall in January and March nourished the soil for healthy bud break. Warmer May temperatures advanced bloom, leading to exceptional Summer growing conditions. Small canopies aided slow and steady sugar accumulation, resulting in a modest yield of exquisite quality. All fruit was hand-harvested over a 30 day period commencing September 6th.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 opens with rich aromas of cassis, red fruit, and blackberry, layered with a subtle touch of vanilla. On the palate, there are hints of plum tart, offering a touch of sweetness alongside its fresh and vibrant character. The finish is long, with impressive fruit persistence, allowing the prime fruit flavors to linger gracefully.

Vintage Notes

The fall season began with promising rainfall, yet the 2022 vintage ultimately turned out to be drier than expected. Nearly 80% of the year’s precipitation fell before December. Fortunately, the beneficial rains in the fall of 2021, combined with warm temperatures at the end of March, contributed to robust nutrient storage and healthy initial growth of the canopy. This early development necessitated more extensive and careful canopy management, but ultimately required minimal crop adjustments as the canopies supported the crop into full and balanced ripeness. Daily temperature shifts experienced in August and September brought fruit to the ideal level of ripeness for the 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Harvest occurred between the 1st and the 29th of September.

Tasting Notes

This 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 opens with concentrated aromas of crème de cassis and raspberry jam, layered with notes of cacao nibs, warm hazelnut, and a subtle whisper of Italian thumbprint cookies. The palate is bold yet poised, featuring grippy, fresh tannins that evolve into a dusty, refined structure, providing balance and tension. Earth-driven undertones of petrichor lend depth and a sense of place. A dark thread of cacao and spice carries through the finish, which is long, textural, and expressive.

Vintage Notes

Winter and spring of 2023 brought a generous amount of rain. Soil moisture delayed bud break, helping to avoid frost. A cool, steady spring kept the vines happy and healthy. By June, conditions were just right for a strong fruit set. Summer warmed up nicely carrying the fruit into a picture-perfect September—ideal for slow, even ripening. The result: red wines with energy, freshness, and beautiful balance. Cool temperatures carried us through August and September, giving the 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon time to hit that perfect balance. We kicked off harvest on October 7th and wrapped up October 20th—smooth and steady.
